We Drink the Wine for a Third Time
The Exquisite Corpse III
Curated by Deanna Sirlin
Welcome to the third edition of the Exquisite Corpse in The Art Section. The first edition of this online collaboration took place in September 2021 as a way of bringing artists together when we were all coping with the pandemic. Twenty-eight artists were invited to participate in an online digital version of the Exquisite Corpse. Artists in this group made these works in their studios and sent them to TAS digitally. The results were nine bodies made collaboratively by twenty-seven artist that manifested fascinating and unexpected artistic collaborations.
The second edition of the Exquisite Corpse in The Art Section was in December of 2023. We were all still catching our breaths and getting back to “normal.” In this edition, we had eleven bodies by thirty-three artists, with an essay by Dr. Elliot King, a noted surrealism scholar. In this edition, it was interesting to see artists step out of their comfort zone, as when artists who are steeped in the language of abstraction created a head, torso, legs or feet.
In this third edition of the Exquisite Corpse the results are a fascinating mix of forty-two drawn, collaged or photographed body parts. The international participant artists are painters, printmakers, sculptors and architects, photographers and performance artists who have taken the prompt to connect with another artist in this collaboration.
This Surrealist activity began in the mid-1920s, a century ago, and the results are truly remarkable. Thank you to all the artists who have taken up this challenge and the readers who have come “to drink the new wine” (from the first exquisite corpse poem : “Le cadavre exquis boira le vin nouveau”).
